Not sure where you are, John. In the US, lumber comes in standard sizes. 5/4" x 6" actually measures about 5 1/2" in width. To get 5" you would have to rip 6" down, to get 6" you have to rip 8", which is 7 1/4". You didn't say what type of siding you were using.
