en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallest_organisms

The smallest organisms found on Earth can be determined according to various aspects of organism size, including volume, mass, height, length, or genome size. Given the incomplete nature of scientific knowledge, it is possible that the smallest organism is undiscovered.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimal_genome

Minimal genome projects. A number of projects have attempted to identify the essential genes of a species. This number should approximate the "minimal genome". For instance, the genome of E. coli has been reduced by about 30%, demonstrating that this species can live with much fewer genes than the wild-type genome contains.

The genome size of RNA viruses is generally shorter than that of DNA viruses and ranges approximately from 2 to 31 kb. The smallest RNA virus identified to date is the human hepatitis D virus (HDV) which is about 1.7 kb in size and contains only one ORF [refs 4–7 in free online article]. $\begingroup$ The plant and bacterial ones I had floating around in my memory having read about them previously, so a bit of googling confirmed the names. The animal ones I got from the Animal Genome Size DB, and from Wikipedia. I guessed that viral genomes would be the smallest, so I also searched for the smallest viral genome.

As with DNA viruses, the genome is an example of maximizing it size. For monopartite ssRNA viruses, the genome encodes a single polyprotein. This protein is then processed into a number of small molecules, each of them critical for the completion of the life cycle of the virus.

Viruses are made up of DNA or RNA surrounded by a protective protein coat. Some may also have an outer lipid layer that protects the virus and functions in pathogenesis. While larger than viroids or single proteins, viruses are still very small. The smallest human-infecting viruses that I came across in my search belong to a group called ...
