For the Chevy 350, the HEI Distributor Cap follows the same firing order as the engine: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. On a small block Chevy V8 engine, the distributor cap firing order is in a clockwise rotation. In most cases it doesn’t matter where the number one position is on your distributor cap, as long as the plug wires are in the correct firing order.

I read about some Drag Racers changing the firing order, on their Small Block Chevy's. I forgot which two cylinders were involved (One on each bank) but it said that all a person would have to do is change the Cam and switch the two wires on the Distributor cap.
