Richard Altmann (12 March 1852 – 8 December 1900) was a German pathologist and histologist from Deutsch Eylau in the Province of Prussia. Altmann studied medicine in Greifswald, Königsberg, Marburg, and Giessen, obtaining a doctorate at the University of Giessen in 1877.


Richard Altmann is often credited with the discovery of mitochondria in 1890, but its discovery was due to the work of several scientists. The word "mitochondria" was first used in 1898, by Carl Benda. At first nobody was sure what it was, until Leonor Michaelis proved it was a part of the cell..


Richard Altmann studied in Greifswald, Königsberg, Marburg, and Giessen, where he was conferred doctor of medicine in 1877. He became assistant and prosector in Leipzig, was habilitated in that town in 1882 and in 1887 became extraordinary professor of anatomy.
