The size of red blood cells depends largely upon their maturity. RBCs are produced on a continual basis in the body within the bone marrow , such as the large bone of the femur. Once an erythrocyte is created, it grows to maturity in approximately 7 days, and each cell lives approximately 120 days.

Diseased bone marrow can produce abnormal red blood cells. These cells may be irregular in size (too large or too small) or shape (sickle-shaped). Anemia is a condition characterized by the lack of production of new or healthy red blood cells. This means that there are not enough functioning red blood cells to carry oxygen to body cells.
Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are the most abundant cells in the bloodstream and contains hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen through the body. While hemoglobin can occur in a free state in some animals, in the human body it has to be contained within a cell – the red blood cell.Any disruption of the red blood cells, its quantity, shape, size, structure or life cycle can ...
A typical human red blood cell has a disk diameter of approximately 6.2–8.2 µm and a thickness at the thickest point of 2–2.5 µm and a minimum thickness in the centre of 0.8–1 µm, being much smaller than most other human cells. These cells have an average volume of about 90 fL with a surface area of about 136 μm 2, and can swell up to a sphere shape containing 150 fL, without membrane ...
Mobility is a key factor in diseases like malaria, which makes red blood cells less deformable, and the genetic disorder sickle cell anemia, which gives red blood cells a sickle shape that ...
One way is by the size of individual red blood cells. Macrocytic anemia refers to large red blood cells that are few in number. Low levels of vitamin B-12 is a common cause of this type of anemia, but if the vitamin B-12 level is normal, there are other potential causes to look into.
Under normal circumstances, red blood cells are a uniform shape and size, the latter of which is defined as the mean corpuscular volume or MCV. According to American Family Physician, when the MCV is greater than 100, macrocytosis exists.
Sickle cell anemia: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a type of anemia that draws its name from the unusual sickle shape of the affected red blood cells. Due to a genetic mutation, the red blood cells ...
Red blood cell, cellular component of blood that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and gives vertebrates’ blood its characteristic color. The mature human red blood cell is small, round, and biconcave. Red blood cells also carry carbon dioxide, a waste product, to the lungs, where it is excreted.
