The second geometric development of this period was the systematic study of projective geometry by Girard Desargues (1591–1661). Projective geometry is the study of geometry without measurement, just the study of how points align with each other. There had been some early work in this area by Hellenistic geometers, notably Pappus (c. 340).
The History of Geometry. Geometry's origins go back to approximately 3,000 BC in ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptians used an early stage of geometry in several ways, including the surveying of land, construction of pyramids, and astronomy.

The second geometric development of this period was the systematic study of projective geometry by Girard Desargues (1591–1661). Projective geometry is a geometry without measurement or parallel lines, just the study of how points are related to each other.
A Brief History of Geometry. Geometry began with a practical need to measure shapes. The word geometry means to “measure the earth” and is the science of shape and size of things. It is believed that geometry first became important when an Egyptian pharaoh wanted to tax farmers who raised crops along the Nile River.
Greek Geometry and Its Influence. Greek geometry eventually passed into the hands of the great Islamic scholars, who translated it and added to it. In this study of Greek geometry, there were many more Greek mathematicians and geometers who contributed to the history of geometry, but these names are the true giants, the ones that developed ...
A search for a better answer to that question has intrigued mathematicians throughout history. Coordinate Geometry: c. 1600 A.D. Descartes made one of the greatest advances in geometry by connecting algebra and geometry. A myth is that he was watching a fly on the ceiling when he conceived of locating points on a plane with a pair of numbers.
This site has a brief history of geometry and the people who created it, including a short biographies with their major achievements. Books about geometry history are given for the ancient, greek, and modern eras.
Geometry: Geometry, the branch of mathematics concerned with the shape of individual objects, spatial relationships among various objects, and the properties of surrounding space. It is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, having arisen in response to such practical problems as those found in
