The second geometric development of this period was the systematic study of projective geometry by Girard Desargues (1591–1661). Projective geometry is the study of geometry without measurement, just the study of how points align with each other. There had been some early work in this area by Hellenistic geometers, notably Pappus (c. 340).
The History of Geometry. Geometry's origins go back to approximately 3,000 BC in ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptians used an early stage of geometry in several ways, including the surveying of land, construction of pyramids, and astronomy.

The study of geometry is extremely ancient, and has been carried on for many thousands of years, across all civilizations – Egypt, Babylonia, India, China, Greece, the Incas, etc. Problems of geometry are so fundamental to our lives that it is natural for this study to be almost as old as civilization itself.
Books about geometry history are given for the ancient, greek, and modern eras. Welcome to the new improved GeomHistory.com web site. This site presents a brief outline of the history of geometry (Ancient, Greek, Medieval, and Modern), with timelines of the major geometers responsible for it's evolution.

Geometry (from the Ancient Greek: γεωμετρία; geo-"earth", -metron "measurement") is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer.. Geometry arose independently in a number of early cultures as a practical way for dealing with len...

Geometry, the branch of mathematics concerned with the shape of individual objects, spatial relationships among various objects, and the properties of surrounding space. It is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, having arisen in response to such practical problems as those found in surveying, and its name is derived from Greek words meaning “Earth measurement.”
Geographical and practical needs in ancient Egypt seem to have given the first impetus for geometrical study. We consider Proclus's account thereof. See http...
