Valence electrons for each element up until about 5th or 6th period of the periodic table? I can't find a valance-electron list online. The reason I ask is I prefer to work backwards; see the number of v.e.'s and then try to make sense of the rules.


The number of valence electrons. The number of valence electrons of an element can be determined by the periodic table group (vertical column) in which the element is categorized. With the exception of groups 3–12 (the transition metals), the units digit of the group number identifies how many valence electrons are associated with a neutral atom of an element listed under that particular column.


To find valence electrons using a period table, first see if your atom is a transitional metal, which are the elements in the middle rectangle of the table. If the atom is outside this block, locate its group number along the top of the table. The ones digit in the group number is the number of valence electrons.


The properties of valence electrons are determined by the total number of electrons in an atom's outer shell. Atoms with similar numbers of valence electrons are classified into a specific group of elements, which may then combine electrons with other elements to form ionic or covalent bonds.


Valence electrons are those electrons that reside in the outermost shell surrounding an atomic nucleus. Valence electrons are of crucial importance because they lend deep insight into an element’s chemical properties: whether it is electronegative or electropositive in nature, or they indicate the bond order of a chemical compound – the number of bonds that can be formed between two atoms.


Add together the valence electrons from each atom. (Recall that the number of valence electrons is indicated by the position of the element in the periodic table.) If the species is a polyatomic ion, remember to add or subtract the number of electrons necessary to give the total charge on the ion.
