Neutropenia (noo-troe-PEE-nee-uh) occurs when you have too few neutrophils, a type of white blood cells. While all white blood cells help your body fight infections, neutrophils are important for fighting certain infections, especially those caused by bacteria. You probably won't know that you have neutropenia.

A low neutrophil count is called neutropenia. The doctor may say you are neutropenic. It’s possible for your total WBC count to be in the normal range while your neutrophil count is low. But because neutrophils normally make up the largest part of the total white blood cell count, the WBC count is usually low when the neutrophil count is low.

If the neutrophil count is very low, fewer than 500 neutrophils in a microliter of blood, it is called severe neutropenia. When the neutrophil count gets this low, even the bacteria normally living in a person's mouth, skin, and gut can cause serious infections.

A low white blood cell (WBC) count, known as leukopenia, can be caused by diseases such as leukemia, cancer, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and some medications, according to the Mayo Clinic. Normal white blood count is 5,000 to 10,000 WBCs per microliter. There are two types of white blood cells: neutrophils and lymphocytes.

It's important to know what are considered normal neutrophil levels, to identify whether they are in fact low.Although blood tests can show these levels, they may vary slightly from one laboratory to another. Normal levels of neutrophils should be between 2000 and 7500 /ml, though a count of 1500 to 8000/ml is also acceptable. If the count is less than 2000 / ml, the white blood cell count is ....

This stimulates the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. It is used for several types of neutropenia, including low white cell count from chemotherpay. This treatment can be lifesaving ...

I just had a complete exam and blood tests. The results show WBC is low (3.1L) and Neutrophils is low (39L, and absolute is 1.2L). My WBC has been low before, and the doctor suggested that was just normal for me, perhaps from radiation treatment. This is the first time that Neutrophils has been low, too.

A low neutrophil count along with a high lymphocyte count can be an indication of viral infections, autoimmune diseases and leukemias. The current article provides information regarding the absolute counts of these cell types, as well as the diseases that lead to high lymphocytes and low neutrophils.

Some groups, such as people of Afro-Caribbean and Middle Eastern descent, often have a low white blood cell count but this is normal and doesn't increase their risk of infections. "Agranulocytosis" and "neutropenia" are common conditions that cause a low white blood cell count. Treating a low white ...

Neutrophils fights off Bacteria and other pathogens. Lymphocytes fights off VIRAL INFECTION. When body is producing more lymphocytes it means body is fighting off to clear viral infection in the body or to clear the cancer cells in the body. In ge...
