Valence electrons for each element up until about 5th or 6th period of the periodic table? I can't find a valance-electron list online. The reason I ask is I prefer to work backwards; see the number of v.e.'s and then try to make sense of the rules.
Find your element on the table. Now, locate the element that you want to find the valence electrons for on the table. You can do this with its chemical symbol (the letters in each box), its atomic number (the number in the top left of each box), or any of the other pieces of information available to you on the table.
The number of valence electrons. The number of valence electrons of an element can be determined by the periodic table group (vertical column) in which the element is categorized. With the exception of groups 3–12 (the transition metals), the units digit of the group number identifies how many valence electrons are associated with a neutral atom of an element listed under that particular column.
Elements whose atoms have the same number of valence electrons are grouped together in the Periodic Table.. Generally, elements in Groups 1, 2, and 13 to 17 tend to react to form a closed shell with a noble gas electron configuration ending in #ns^2 np^6#.. METALS. The most reactive metals are those from Groups 1 and 2.
As you can see from the successive ionization energies of any element, valence electrons are held most loosely and can therefore be transferred or shared most easily. Core electrons on the other hand, are held tightly and are not easily transferred or shared. Consequently, valence electrons play a central role in chemical bonding.
To determine how many valence electrons are present, scientists should look at the vertical column, which is the periodic table group, where the element is. How many valence electrons an element has is the group number's units digit. The exception to this is with the transition metals in groups three through 12.

The columns, or groups, in the periodic table are used to determine the number of valence electrons for each element. The noble/ inert gases are chemically stable and have a full valence level of electrons. Other elements react in order to achieve the same stability as the noble gases.
