A latching relay is a two-position electrically-actuated switch. It is controlled by two momentary-acting switches or sensors, one that 'sets' the relay, and the other 'resets' the relay. The latching relay maintains its position after the actuating switch has been released, so it performs a basic memory function.


The relay has latching contacts, this means once energised and power is removed the contacts stay in that state until the second coil is energised. Once you have the system wired as above, you may find the indicators are back to front, this is due to the state of the relay when you first switch ON.


Both circuits provide an inexpensive way of deriving a latching function from a momentary switch and, just like a mechanical latching switch, the quiescent (unlatched) power dissipation is zero .
