This circuit allows an SPST momentary pushbutton to act as a push-on push-off switch, using a DPDT latching (bi-stable) relay. It was originally intended to allow a single pushbutton switch on the dash of a vintage car to provide a latched function. The relay only draws current when it is being ...

I was building a water control device for a client and needed a latching relay. While I didn't feel that this component was heavy duty enough for my needs, I do think it is a real handy control circuit for smaller projects.

Low-current, momentary action pushbutton switches, such as PCB-mount 'tactile' types, are cheap, and available in an abundance of different styles. Latching types, on the other hand, are often larger, more expensive, and available only in a relatively limited range of styles. This can be a problem ...

When the momentary switch is pressed, I need the LED to light (uno led on pin 13) and the relay to switch. When pressed again the LED should turn off and the relay switch back. I'm using a dual latching relay that has a current pulse requirement of around 20mA @5V.

The relay has latching contacts, this means once energised and power is removed the contacts stay in that state until the second coil is energised. Once you have the system wired as above, you may find the indicators are back to front, this is due to the state of the relay when you first switch ON.

Latching Momentary Switch Circuit. Momentary switches turn on only when pushed. Latching switches require a press turn turn on continuously and will toggle off with a second press. Latching switches are more complex mechanically, larger, and more expensive. The circuit below creates latching action from a momentary switch.

A latching relay is a two-position electrically-actuated switch. It is controlled by two momentary-acting switches or sensors, one that 'sets' the relay, and the other 'resets' the relay. The latching relay maintains its position after the actuating switch has been released, so it performs a basic memory function.

Latched On/Off Output Using a Single Momentary Negative Pulse - Positive Output Relay Wiring Diagram: Similar to the momentary to constant configuration, we can engage and disengage the latched output with a single pulse from a switch or an output from an alarm or remote keyless entry.
