On August 6, 1901, the Kiowa land in Oklahoma was opened for white settlement, effectively dissolving the contiguous reservation. While each Kiowa head of household was allotted 80 acres, the only land remaining in Kiowa tribal ownership today is scattered parcels of grassland which had been leased to the white settlers for grazing before the reservation was opened for settlement.

Kiowa (/ ˈ k aɪ ə w ə,-w ɑː,-w eɪ /) people are a Native American tribe and an indigenous people of the Great Plains of the US. They migrated southward from western Montana into the Rocky Mountains in Colorado in the 17th and 18th centuries, and finally into the Southern Plains by the early 19th century. In 1867, the Kiowa were moved to a reservation in southwestern Oklahoma.
On July 13, 2019 the Kiowa Legislature called a Kiowa Indian Council (KIC) special meeting to be held on October 26, 2019 as allowed by the Kiowa Constitution. The sole purpose of the KIC Special Meeting is to select a KIC Coordinator.
