How to Clean Silver Naturally. Here’s what you need to do if your silver is in a similar state: First, line the bottom of your sink with aluminum foil with the shiny side up. Next, add in as much tarnished silver as will fit and sprinkle it all with about a cup or even a bit more of baking soda. Next you’ll need some really hot water.

Cleaning Tarnished Silver This is the best method we have found for quickly and easily cleaning tarnished silver items. Do not use this method on items that should not be submerged in water. Place a double layer of aluminum foil in the bottom of a non-metallic container; Add enough hot water to cover the item

Pour in the boiling water and then place the silver into your pan, making sure each piece is touching the foil. Try not to let any of the pieces overlap. This should only take about 30 seconds but if you have heavily tarnished pieces you may need to let them soak a few minutes longer.

Add silver pieces, boil 2-3 minutes, making sure the water covers the silver pieces. Remove silver, rinse, dry, and buff with a soft cloth. This method cleans the design and crevices of silver pieces. Toothpaste: To clean off tarnish, coat the silver with toothpaste, then run it under warm water, work it into a foam, and rinse it off.

I used to have my kids demo this for science experiments in middle school. The hot water and baking soda act as a plating bath. You are doing electroplating, and the ions of silver sulfide (aka tarnish) are plated onto the aluminum foil. When the aluminum foil gets really dark (covered with the silver tarnish) it reaction stops working.

After about 5 minutes carefully remove the silver and buff with a microfiber cloth. Some heavily tarnished pieces may need a second soaking to come clean. Repeat if necessary-the very heavily tarnished forks I showed in the first picture did need a second soaking but everything else came clean the first time.

Clean your tarnished silver safely using natural and readily available household products. Stubborn tarnish may require more than one method to bring the silver back to a bright, shiny surface.
