Dry ice gives off carbon dioxide gas, and so there was a thick layer of carbon dioxide in the bottom of the tub. Because carbon dioxide is heavier than air, and the bubble was made of air, the bubble actually floated above the carbon dioxide layer because it was lighter.

Carbon dioxide, also known by the chemical formula CO2, has a higher density than the other gases found in air, which makes CO2 heavier than the air. Air is composed of approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, and less than 1 percent of other gases.

"Like carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide is heavier than air so the highest concentration of gas is typically located at the silage surface, which is the area where a person will be going if they need to enter the silo for any reason." Out in the open atmosphere, there is enough motion in the air to keep the oxygen and carbon dioxide mixed up.

carbon dioxide is heavier than air. This is why its used in fire extinguisher because it displaces the air and creates a blanket of carbon dioxide where combustion cant take place. The correct term to use is density; which is the mass of substance in a certain volume. The density of carbon dioxide = 1.799Kg/L @ STP

Why do carbon dioxide emissions weigh more than the original fuel? The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is produced from burning a fuel weighs more than the amount of the fuel itself, because during complete combustion, each carbon atom in the fuel combines with two oxygen atoms in the air to make CO2.

I was thinking about home brew beer what happens in the air between the brewing beer and the air-lock. It starts out as a stand mux of air. My original thought was that the CO2 generated as a byproduct of fermentation would be heavier than the rest of the air and push that air out through the air lock.

That title is a question I get a lot during home inspections. And this one - Is carbon monoxide lighter or heavier than air? Of course, any time you have gas appliances or a wood-burning fireplace, you should have at least one carbon monoxide (CO) detector in the home.
