How Loud Is 50 Decibels? Fifty decibels is the level of noise of a quiet conversation at home or a quiet stream. In comparison, the general base of 70 decibels is the noise level of a vacuum cleaner or of radio and TV audio. The sound of breathing is about 10 decibels. City traffic is 85 decibels.

Arbitrary base of comparison. Upper 70s are annoyingly loud to some people. Conversation in restaurant, office, background music, Air conditioning unit at 100 feet. 60. Half as loud as 70 dB. Fairly quiet. Quiet suburb, conversation at home. Large electrical transformers at 100 feet. 50. One-fourth as loud as 70 dB.

Most noise levels are given in dBA, which are decibels adjusted to reflect the ear's response to different frequencies of sound. Sudden, brief impulse sounds, like many of those shown at 120 dB or greater, are often given in dB (no adjustment).

2 times as loud as 70 dB. Possible damage in 8 h exposure. Passenger car at 65 mph at 25 ft (77 dB); freeway at 50 ft from pavement edge 10 a.m. (76 dB). Living room music (76 dB); radio or TV-audio, vacuum cleaner (70 dB). 70: Arbitrary base of comparison. Upper 70s are annoyingly loud to some people.

More decibels means a louder sound. 70 decibels is 10 times as loud as 60 decibels; 60 decibels is 10 times as loud as 50 decibels, etc. (That's called a logarithmic scale.)

I find it easier to compare this way...each 3 dBA is a doubling of sound pressure level. So 40 dBA is twice as loud as 37 dBA and 4 times as load as 34 dBA I'd suggest the 612 (9 - 36 dBA) and a damn fine performer for $50

Dishwasher noise levels are rated in decibels, the lower the decibel number the quieter the dishwasher. A difference of just a few decibels may not seem to be much, but a dishwasher that is just one decibel more is actually 30 percent louder. A dishwasher that is four decibels more is twice as loud.

Using dBA units, sound monitors can accurately reflect what noise frequencies the human ear will be sensitive to. Most dishwashers range from about 46 to 60 decibels. On the surface, this decibel level may not sound like much, but in reality, this is loud enough to interrupt a normal conversation.
