The Holy Spirit has been sent to us as a gift and a blessing, and He is the helper we need in all areas of our lives. He teaches us to pray in the Spirit in a language we do not even know about. We cannot do anything to deserve this gift; God offers it to us out of His grace and love for us.
Defining what the Holy Spirit is, what functions it performs and how the Holy Spirit actually changes one’s life is daunting. To begin to deal with this, we decided to look at when the Holy Spirit was first introduced in the Bible.
This page is also available in: العربية (Arabic) हिन्दी (Hindi) We receive the Holy Spirit when we accept and follow the Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:5-16). To be “born of water and of the Spirit” is equivalent to being “born again,” that is, “from above” (John 3:3). The Bible clearly spells out the simple requirements to receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit:
The 9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. God’s Word tells us that we should earnestly seek and desire these gifts, not quenching the Spirit “Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy…”—1 Corinthians 14:39 “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.”—1 Corinthians 14:1 “Do not quench the Spirit.
Get to know the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit and beg the Holy Spirit that these Heavenly Gifts will become more and more active or operative in your daily life. The following are the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.
This prayer to the Holy Spirit can also be used as a great forgiveness exercise. If you notice a thought in your mind of what someone has done to you, and this is not helpful for you, you can ask the Holy Spirit to work in this person and hold a vision for their ability to receive the Holy Spirit in their life.
Being filled by the Holy Spirit is not getting more of Him, but Him getting more of the believer! Many times the disciples “were filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 4:8, 31; 6:3; 7:55, 9:17, 11:24, 13:9, 13:52), yet there was no mention of tongues (other languages) being spoken. Losing The Filling of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is available to those who have put their trust in Jesus Christ. He speaks to our hearts and leads us in the right direction when we learn to listen. The Holy Spirit has been described as wind (John 3:8), a dove (Mark 1:10), and a gift (Acts 2:38). The Spirit of God can be grieved and quenched by disobedient believers.
The Holy Spirit takes what is of Jesus Christ and shows it to us John 16:14-15: He shall glorify Me: for He shall take what is mine, and shall show it unto you. All things that the Father has are mine: therefore said I, that He shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” So if you are receiving a wise biblical plan along with an inner peace, this is a sign the Holy Spirit is truly speaking to you.
