We receive the Holy Spirit the moment we believe in Christ. When we receive the Holy Spirit into our lives, we have a new awareness of Christ, and can begin entering a relationship with Him.

The book of Acts tells us much about how those who sought to follow Christ received the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2:38 Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
We know that we have received the the Spirit of Christ is if there is a work of sanctification done by the Spirit in our lives. Speaking in tongues, performing miracles, doing many other good things is not the true indication of receiving the true Spirit of Christ. The main work of the Spirit is to conform us to the image of Christ.
2. Look for someone who has experienced the power of the Holy Spirit to pray with you. There are nine gifts of the Holy Spirit as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12 in the Bible that are available to all believers who have been baptised in the spirit. Even though the gifts are available to all, it is generally not known how they are received so that the Body of Christ can be built up.
