The oil pump is bolted to the front main bulkhead. The crankshaft goes through the pump ( like alot of jap engines) The relief valve is on the side of the pump. It requires dissasembling the front of the engine to gain access. It's rare for a valve to stick. You may have big problems brewing.

I have a question about lubrication problems on Ford 4.6 engines. I have three Crown Vics and they all have a dry rattle on startup after about 1500 miles on an oil change. This is using Motorcraft 5w20 syn blend and the motorcraft filter. Is this normal for this engine.
1st gen 4.6 good for alot of miles. seen with 200-300k running good. Managed a fleet with 170 vehicles, 80% Ford. Had a unit that the low oil pressure lighton at stops, replaced sending unit, no change. Had the throttle body cleaned and problem went away. the idle increased just enough after the cleaning to eliminate problem.
