I've heard from a ford engineer that it was at least partially for that reason, that they chose 7.3 as the displacement of the new gas engine. The old 7.3 Diesel engine ( in Powerstoke form) has a great reputation. Even if it wasn't a Ford engine, and is really a Navistar T444E.

Upgraded to a 24v cummins shortly after and it went to 11mpg same trailer. Diesel was cheaper than gas back then, but seems to be creeping up higher and higher. It was a great engine and I bet the newer ones with the 6 speed would do better on fuel. I liked hearing that ford is planning on using the 7.3 gasser in all their medium duty trucks.

Ford's 2.7EB is one of the sturdiest engines Ford has designed. That is my unserstanding, Ford did not put a CGI block into the 2.7 eco without thought. CGI is what is in the 6.7 diesel block and the 7.3 gas.

Re: Ford 7.3L Gas Engine I’m thinking this pushrod 7.3L motor will make a great crate motor too, especially with the classic truck crowd. It’d be sweet to swap one of these into an early 70’s F-250 High Boy.

Page 1 of 3 - what gas engine? 2020 F350: 6.2 Gas or 7.3 L Gas? - posted in Trucks, Truck Accessories & Mods: what gas engine? 2020 F350: 6.2 Gas or 7.3 L Gas? Hi all Any guesses as to the increase in price from the 6.2 L gasser to the 7.3 L gasser? If it was you (and you didn’t want diesel) what engine would you buy? the 6.2 L gasser or the 7.3 L gasser? Our plan is to custom order a gasser ....

The last time we saw a 7.3L engine in a Ford -F-Series truck it was the 2003 Powerstroke Diesel. That engine in its most powerful form made 275HP and 525TQ. I expect that when the 2020 model hits the new gasoline 7.3 V8 will make as much torque as the old 7.3L PSD.

The Ford 7.3 is only marginally more potent than the FCA 6.4 , and the 6.4 will drop right in without a bunch of Rube Goldberg fab work. I kinda doubt you can even buy a Ford 7.3 crate, and if you could it would be a massive mechanical and electrical/computer undertaking for 20hp more than the 6.4 that is effectively plug and play.

When Ford announced that it was designing and building the all-new, 7.3L Godzilla V8 as a naturally aspirated, gas-powered, pushrod engine, it came as a pretty big surprise. After all, the automaker made the move to dual-overhead cams in its 5.0L Coyote V8 years ago, and much of the rest of its engine lineup consists of EcoBoost four and six-cylinder engines.
