During that time, Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy produced a series of investigations and hearings to expose supposed communist infiltration of various areas of the U.S. government. Other aspects of the Red Scare included the House Un-American Activities Committee and the Hollywood blacklist.

The most famous examples of McCarthyism are the investigation into the leftist influence of the motion picture industry by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), and investigations conducted by Senator McCarthy's Senate sub-committee, culminating in 1954 with hearings about subversion within the Army.

McCarthy was a senator who falsely accused everybody he did not agree with politically, as being a Communist. A modern day example would be Republicans calling Obama a Communist, Socialist, Nazi, etc. just because they disagree with him even when he is not close to any of these things.
