Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and frightening female characters. When we first see her, she is already plotting Duncan’s murder, and she is stronger, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband. She seems fully aware of this and knows that she will have to push Macbeth into committing murder.

We see this in him again at the end of the play, where he fights on even through he knows he cannot win. The three witches work to drive him on with his plan. If it wasn't for them, he probably would not have even started his plan to become King. Macbeth couldn't carry out his plans by himself. He needed to be pushed by Lady Macbeth.

When audiences first encounter Lady Macbeth, she seems a very forceful and dominant personality, and we can assume that she is the villain, or antagonist, of the play. Unlike Macbeth, who deliberates over whether or not to kill Duncan and who wrestles with loyalty to his king, Lady Macbeth is single-minded in her lust for power.

Unlike Macbeth’s conscious guilt, Lady Macbeth’s guilt is subconsciously expressed through her dreams and is evidenced by her sleepwalking.
