Elbow muscles are commonly referred to as flexors or extensors, depending on how they affect elbow movement. Extensors are on the inside of the arm and help extend the arm outward. Flexors are at ...
The elbow is a synovial hinge joint located between the upper arm and forearm. It is formed by the meeting of three bones: the humerus in the upper arm and the ulna and radius in the lower arm. Like all other hinge joints, the elbow permits movement in one plane, namely the flexion and extension of the forearm relative to the upper arm.
The elbow joint is a simple hinge joint but most movements involving the elbow joint also involve the radioulnar joint where the forearm bones (radius and ulna) join at the elbow joint. Muscles producing movements at the elbow and forearm are the triceps brachii, brachioradialis, brachialis, biceps brachii, and the anconeus.
Extension is limited by the olecranon reaching the olecranon fossa, tension in the anterior ligament, and resistance in flexor muscles. Forced extension results in a rupture in one of the limiting structures: olecranon fracture, torn capsule and ligaments, and, though the muscles are normally left unaffected, a bruised brachial artery.
MOTION OF FLEXION AND EXTENSION OF THE ELBOW JOINT ANATOMY The motion of flexion and extension of the elbow joint is directed by the muscles of the brachium. The powerful muscles of this group include the biceps brachii, the brachioradialis, the brachialis, and the triceps brachii. Just along the rim of the elbow joint, over the distal portion of the triceps brachii, there lies and additional ...
When asked to flex a muscle, you'll most likely flex your biceps by bending your elbow. Although the biceps muscle is involved with flexion of the elbow, contrary to popular belief, it's not always the most active elbow flexor. Several other arm muscles are involved in elbow flexion and can be more ...
