Hedgehogs are much smaller than porcupines, ranging in length from 5 to 12 inches and weighing between less than 1 and 2.5 pounds. Porcupine and hedgehog are genetically unrelated types of spiny mammals. Porcupine is type of large rodent, while hedgehog belongs to the order Erinaceomorpha which includes hedgehogs and gymnures. There are 29 species of porcupine classified in two groups: Old World porcupines, native to Europe, Asia and Africa and New World porcupines, native to North and South America.
The most obvious differences between hedgehogs and porcupines are size and defense mechanisms. A hedgehog is significantly smaller than a porcupine. It curls into a ball with spikes facing outward to ward off predators; the porcupine defends itself by stabbing attackers with quills.
