The melting points of polar substances are higher than the melting points of nonpolar substances with similar sizes. For example, the melting point of iodine monochloride, which is polar, is 27 degrees Celsius/80.6 degrees Fahrenheit, while the melting point of bromine, a nonpolar substance, is -7.2 degrees Celsius/19.04 degrees Fahrenheit.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melting_point

The melting point of a pure substance is always higher and has a smaller range than the melting point of an impure substance or, more generally, of mixtures. The higher the quantity of other components, the lower the melting point and the broader will be the melting point range, often referred to as the "pasty range".

Set the MEL-TEMP at a high enough level to make a rapid determination of melting point. Observe the melting process though the magnifying lens. Once a melting point range is determined, prepare another capillary tube (tubes should only be used once and then discarded) and set the MEL-TEMP to the appropriate power level, based on the power level ...

So, the compound above that will have the highest melting point will certainly be an ionic compound, either $\ce{NaCl}$, $\ce{CaF2}$ or $\ce{SrCl2}$. I thought that I should calculate the molar weight but that won't work, because the correct answer is $\ce{CaF2}$, and $\ce{SrCl2}$ has a greater molar weight.

Best Answer: Do you mean in the lab? In the lab you just take a sample of the substance and monitor temperature until you see the substance melt. If you want to estimate a bp from a compounds composition and structure you can do that as well. Size is proportional to melting point, the higher the MW the ...
