It is thought that Pluto's tenuous atmosphere may become even thinner as the planet moves toward aphelion (which it will reach in 2113), then regain its present density as it again moves toward perihelion. Why should this be? Thanks and I'll pick best answer
Pluto's atmosphere is roughly 90% Nitrogen, and 10% other complex molecules such as methane. The composition of Pluto's atmosphere is very similar to the Earth's which is also 80% Nitrogen. The complex molecules probably come from radiation, which forces new molecules to be created from the surface of Pluto.
Ashley:

This is an astute comment.

The difficulty, as I see it, is non-recognition of Pluto's true significance - that it is the first body found belonging to the Kuiper Belt. That's a scientific reality, not an opinion or a value judgement. As such, it should be easy for scientists to accept.
So little was known about the atmosphere at the time that you could get a computer model to predict just about anything. But after those stellar occultations revealed its unexpected atmosphere, I ...
Pluto has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets in the solar system. Its orbit takes it to 49.5 AU (7.4 billion kilometers) at its farthest point from the Sun. And its orbit takes it as close as 29 AU (4.34 billion kilomters) to the Sun. That means that Pluto's orbit draws within the orbit of ...
It is extremely tenuous, the surface pressure being only a few microbars. Pluto's atmosphere may exist as a gas only when Pluto is near its perihelion; for the majority of Pluto's long year, the atmospheric gases are frozen into ice. Near perihelion, it is likely that some of the atmosphere escapes to space perhaps even interacting with Charon.
Observations made during the New Horizons flyby provide a detailed snapshot of the current state of Pluto's atmosphere. Whereas the lower atmosphere (at altitudes of less than 200 kilometers) is consistent with ground-based stellar occultations, the upper atmosphere is much colder and more compact than indicated by pre-encounter models.
