Ventricular dilation is caused by volume overload. Hereby, new sarcomeres are added in-series to existing sarcomeres. Volume overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy is known as eccentric hypertrophy (figure 1). In endurance training, the volume load is a predominant factor; therefore, the endurance-trained heart develops eccentric hypertrophy. 15

Concentric vs Eccentric hypertrophy? What's the difference between concentric and eccentric hypertrophy. I only know that eccentric is in response to volume overload and causes the addition of sarcomeres in series, thus enlarging radius in proportion to the wall thickness.

Concentric hypertrophy is associated with increased left ventricular wall thickness whereas eccentric hypertrophy is characterized by dilatation of the left ventricular chamber; however, there occurs a general increase in the overall size of cardiomyocytes under both conditions.

Ventricular hypertrophy may be divided into two categories: concentric (maladaptive) hypertrophy and eccentric (adaptive) hypertrophy. Concentric hypertrophy results from various stressors to the heart including hypertension, congenital heart defects (such as Tetralogy of Fallot), valvular defects (aortic coarction or stenosis), and primary ...

Left ventricular hypertrophy is a form of cardiac remodeling that causes the heart wall muscle to thicken, which leads to an increase in LV mass (LVM). There are different sub-categories that fall into the diagnosis of LVH, which includes concentric, eccentric and concentric remodeling.

Concentric Contraction (the ‘hard’ half of the rep) and Eccentric Contraction (the ‘easy’ half) yield different levels of hypertrophy, so knowing which is more effective is clearly to your advantage.

When we talk about left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in cardiac imaging, the terms concentric LVH and eccentric LVH are often used. However the word 'eccentric' sometimes causes confusion - it's important to realise that the word 'eccentric' does not mean 'asymmetric' in the context of LVH.

Whether modifications of LV geometry from concentric to eccentric are beneficial beyond the reduction of LV mass has been debated; however, the conclusion has been, in general, that concentric LV hypertrophy is also characterized by greater LV mass than eccentric LV hypertrophy; therefore, these 2 features (ie, concentric geometry and LV ...

Heart failure is a global problem with an estimated prevalence of 38 million patients worldwide, a number that is increasing with the ageing of the population.
