The word "vespa" is Italian for "wasp." It has been rumored that the Vespa got its name after Enrico Piaggio, the pioneer of the Vespa, saw the scooter design and exclaimed, "It looks like a wasp!" Thus, the Vespa was born. The Piaggio Group was founded in Genoa, Italy, in 1884.
As of 2015, the Vespa motor scooter comes in the following models in the United States: the 946, Sprint, GTS, Primavera, LX, S, the LXV150IE and the GTV150IE.
