Any company that works in interstate commerce by operating commercial vehicles to transport passengers or haul cargo must have a USDOT number. Also, an interstate commercial carrier that transports hazardous materials in quantities requiring safety permits must also have a USDOT number.

The USDOT number acts as a unique identifier of a company’s safety information. It helps during collecting and monitoring safety information for crash investigation, compliance reviews, inspections and audits.

All motor carrier drivers and operators in the United States are required to comply with the regulations of the FMCSA. Detailed information on which companies need a USDOT number and how to get it is available at FMCSA.dot.gov. As of July 2015, 33 states in the United States also require commercial carriers to have a USDOT number, and the list is available on FMCSA website.

Companies can request a USDOT number online, through mail or by fax. A USDOT number is generated immediately if requested online. It takes up to 10 business days to receive the USDOT number after mailing or faxing the application.

If the company does not possess a USDOT number, the results page indicates that there are no records in the SAFER database matching the inputted USDOT number. The company snapshot contains an electronic record of the companies' identification, safety record, crash information and a roadside out-of-service inspection summary. It also indicates the company's size and commodity information. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation provides free access to the SAFER system.
