A vanity plate is a specific type of vehicle registration plate where the owner pays extra money to be able to have his own choice of letters or numbers displayed. These plates are also often referred to as a prestige plates, private number plates or custom plates.
The amount of characters allowed on a vanity plate can vary from state to state, and in many states the amount of characters allowed are actually less than the amount on a standard-issue plate. Many states also allow people to search online to see which specific phrases and combinations of letters are available before going in to purchase the plate. In the United States, all states have a “blue list” that lists all of the words, phrases and combinations that are not allowed to be used on vanity plates.
