Most cars and trucks with manual transmissions and four-wheel-drive sport utility vehicles with manual transfer cases can be flat-towed. Scion, Lexus, Toyota or other vehicles with automatic transmission are not suitable for flat towing.
Although most manual transmission vehicles can be flat-towed, vehicles that require pumps inside the transmission to lubricate moving parts cannot be flat-towed. Automatic transmission and manual transmission vehicles that are pump-dependent online lubricate the output shaft if the engine is running. If towed with all four wheels running on the road, these vehicles turn the drive shafts or half-shafts, which may cause severe damage. Most automakers state whether their vehicles can be flat-towed in the model's manual.
