Online driving manuals from the Department of Motor Vehicles cover a variety of topics, including rules of the road, how to read traffic signs and signals, safety tips, and the regulations regarding driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Each state produces its own driving manuals, which may also cover topics such as the procedure for applying for a driver's license in that state, how to handle emergency situations, changing a person's name or address, and non-resident driving issues.
Each state produces a variety of DMV handbooks and driving manuals, such as those for a standard driver's license, commercial driver's license and motorcycle license. Some states also produce other resources, such as driver's handbooks for teen drivers. Each state also produces its own Vehicle Code book, which includes information related to that state's traffic laws and other laws related to operating a motor vehicle.
The commercial driver's license manual usually covers topics such as the transportation of hazardous materials, air brakes, required pre-trip inspections, how to carry passengers and cargo safely, and information related to towing trailers. Motorcycle manuals cover topics such as changing lanes safely, passing other vehicles and being passed, choosing the right gear and riding in groups safely.
Most states have their driver's manuals available online, but copies of all the manuals can be picked up from the local DMV office.
