The Volvo XC60 was listed as the safest vehicle, according to Autobytel, followed by the Volvo S80, Volvo S60, Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander. The rest of the top 10 safest cars are the Mercedes-Benz M Class, Mazda CX-5, Mazda3, Acura MDX and Acura RLX.
All of the top 10 safest vehicles are part of the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety Top Safety Picks list and are all designed to keep passengers safe in a crash. All of these vehicles also have systems in place that help to prevent crashes by implementing a series of warning systems and automatic breaking. In addition, these systems have sensors that can slow and even stop the car when getting too close to stationary objects, pedestrians or other vehicles.
Volvo has been the top name in safety for many years, as the company's top concern is the safety of passengers. Since this is the case, it is uncommon to see any top 10 list without at least one or two Volvo models. Volvo, however, is not the only name in safety, and a number of other brands, especially Mazda and Acura frequent these lists. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety testing system is not the only type of safety testing in the country, but it is the most rigorous.
