A hydrostatic transmission can attract dust, dirt and other particles that clog the system's oil cooler. This commonly leads to transmission failure, so make sure to clean the oil cooler and remove any clogs that may have appeared there whenever repairing a hydrostatic transmission assembly. The oil cooler is located under the seat of the unit and features multiple oil cooler fins that can simply be wiped off with a clean cloth.
The oil tank of a hydrostatic transmission is typically located directly beneath the oil cooler. Use a clean rag to wipe the hydraulic tank cap clean before checking the oil level of the transmission. If the oil is contaminated, it may be necessary to change out the entrained hydraulic oil. Remove the drain cap, and let the machine sit until the transmission is completely empty. Be sure to use a drain pan and to dispose of the contaminated oil in an environmentally responsible way.
