The F-22 Raptor is 62 feet long and 16.7 feet high and has a wingspan of 44.5 feet. The wing area is 840 square feet. The horizontal tail span is 29 feet. The jet's empty weight is 43,340 pounds, and maximum takeoff weight is 83,500 pounds, including pilots, fuel and weapons. It has a flight range of 1,600 nautical miles. The jet has two turbofan engines with two-dimensional thrust-vectoring nozzles. These nozzles reduce the capability of enemy infrared detectors, making it harder to hit the F-22 with heat-seeking missiles.
The F-22 Raptor has the capability of entering and operating in enemy territory virtually undetected, according to Lockheed Martin. It achieves greater than Mach 1.5 without afterburners, which enhances safety. Its great acceleration and razor-sharp turning ability lend the jet extreme fighting ability.
