All of the 3406 engines are turbocharged and have an additional power generator attached to them. The generator uses a single bearing with a permanent four-pole magnet. It is mounted next to the engine in a large metal frame with metal cross-supports and has a three-phase voltage regulator that measures both volts and hertz.
Other standard features include an instrument panel, a lubrication system, a cooling system and an exhaust system. It has corrosion-resistant air intakes and an internal air filter. The cooling system works by pumping in sea water with an expansion tank, and the transmission and engine have oil coolers.
The total dry weight of the 3406 is 6,819 pounds. It is 117.28 inches long when measured from the end of the engine to the end of the flywheel housing. The overall height of the engine is 58.04 inches, and the width is 39.22 inches. Caterpillar offers multiple accessories and transmission options, which can affect the gross weight.Learn more about Engine
