The engine is capable of displacing 454 cubic inches of air with 4.25 inches in bore and 4 inches in stroke and at a compression ratio of 8.75 to one. It is an eight-cylinder engine with iron rectangular cylinder heads and forged aluminum pistons. It delivers 500 pounds-feet of torque, and it features a forged steel crankshaft and a hydraulic roller camshaft.
The torque output climbs steadily until 3,550 rpm and decreases after that point. The engine delivers some 400 pounds-feet of torque at 5,250 rpm. The Chevy 454 features forged steel connecting rods, stamped steel rocker arms and a cast-iron water pump. The engine block is cast-iron with four-bolt main caps. It comes with an externally-balanced 14-inch automatic transmission flexplate.
Chevrolet recommends using 92-octane fuel with the engine and warns against exceeding 5,500 rpm. If using a cast-iron exhaust manifold, Chevy advises replacing the lower head bolts with shorter heads to provide clearance. The engine does not come with a carburetor, a starter, a fuel pump, a distributor or an ignition system. The parts are available at Chevrolet Performance.
