As of 2015, the Subaru Impreza and Subaru Legacy are the two top-rated small four-wheel drive cars, according to Consumer Reports. These two Subaru models are also among the most affordable four-wheel drive cars, as reported by AutoTrader.com.
Subaru installs four-wheel drive on all of the cars it produces except for the BRZ performance coupe. Both the Impreza and Legacy are small sedans that are also offered in hatchback configurations. The Legacy is a more luxurious model than the base Impreza, while the Impreza line includes performance models such as the WRX. The base Impreza is also the most affordable vehicle with standard four-wheel drive on the market
Many luxury-car manufacturers offer four-wheel drive versions of their small vehicles, such as the 3 Series XDrive models produced by BMW, but four-wheel drive is not typically a standard feature on such cars. The four-wheel drive versions of the BWM 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Volvo S60 and Cadillac ATS are also rated among the top four-wheel drive compact cars by Consumer Reports. The BMW 3 Series is offered in coupe, sedan and hatchback styles, while the Cadillac CTS and S60 have available four-wheel drive on both coupe and sedan versions. The S60 is only offered in sedan styles, according to Consumer Reports.
