The standard recommendation calls for an oil change at approximately 5,000 miles or every six months. However, the recommended frequency that one should change the oil in one's car varies with factors such as the age of the car, driving conditions and climate.
Those driving in optimal conditions should change the oil of their cars every 7,500 miles. For those driving older vehicles, driving often in stop-and-go traffic or driving frequently over unpaved terrain, auto experts recommend changing the oil as often as every 1,000 to 3,000 miles. When one changes the oil in his car less often than recommended, protective oil additives can burn away and contaminants can collect in the oil. The contaminate particles can abrade the engine and cause corrosive damage.
