To get a ServSafe food handler card, you must take a course and pass an exam. The course is available online and takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete. The test includes 40 questions, and you must answer 75 percent of the questions correctly to pass.
The ServSafe food handler course consists of five sections: Personal Hygiene, Allergens, Basic Food Safety, Cleaning and Sanitation, and Time and Temperature. These sections must be completed before the test becomes available. In addition, managers can ask employees to complete an optional section that is job specific. You have 12 months to complete the course from the date of purchase; although, once the course is started, you must complete it within 60 days.
There is no time limit on the 40-question test, and you can take the test as many times as necessary. Once you pass the test, however, the course and assessment are no longer accessible. Those who pass the assessment receive an online certificate of completion.
In addition to taking the ServSafe food handlers course online, you can also find instructors who may teach the course in person. This is an ideal option for those who are interested in training with a group.
