Each sample written test includes 10 questions designed to help the applicant become familiar with the possible questions that may appear in the actual knowledge exam. The written test is about safe driving practices, traffic laws and common vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting methods. The sample test questions require a JavaScript-enabled browser to check the correct answers immediately. Users with computers or devices that do not use JavaScript or who are using screen readers can access the separate answer sheet provided by the site.

The sample questions are available in English, Spanish and American Sign Language. Persons with disabilities may also complete the knowledge test by listening to an audio tape or by having an instructor ask the questions instead of reading the written test. The audio test is available in a number of languages, including Arabic, German, Japanese, Turkish and Korean. Aside from the free sample questions on the California DMV site, DMV.org also offers a California practice test packet that includes 100 practice questions for a minimal fee.
