The 2015 Toyota RAV4 scored the highest rating of Good across all five major safety categories, as rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2015 model is the first RAV4 model to score Good in all five categories.
The IIHS is one of the leading industry authorities on automobile safety, according to its website, and it rates automobiles in five crash safety categories: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. In 2013 and 2014, the RAV4 rated Good in all categories except small front overlap, which scored Poor grades both years. From 1996 to 2012, the RAV4 received mixed ratings among the categories, scoring some Poor, Moderate and Acceptable scores, with no Good scores until 2004.
