To replace a tail light cover on a car, open the trunk, unscrew the tail cover, unfasten the cover from its seal, pry out the cover, and install a replacement cover. Depending upon the make and model of the vehicle, the replacement directions may slightly differ. You need a four-in-one screwdriver and a socket or ratchet set to complete the project.
Purchase a replacement tail light cover from an auto parts store or online. Depending on the make and model of the car, locate the mounting screws in the car frame or along the edge of the cover. Twist the screws counterclockwise, remove the screws, and set them aside for reuse. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the cover off the plastic adhesive or any other seal securing it to the assembly.
Pull out the cover while pulling back the assembly, taking care not to interfere with the bulb and its electrical connections. Remove any broken pieces from the socket.
Gently place the new cover in its mounting position, and loosely fasten it in place with the retained screws. Ensure that the cover is properly positioned, and tighten the screws. Seal the cover with a plastic adhesive or tabs. Check the operation of the new cover. To get an even appearance, polish the other cover with a plastic polish, or follow the same directions to replace it.
