In order to renew a driver's license, you will need the documentation that the state requires, as well as a method of payment for the renewal fee. Requirements for renewing a driver's license vary from state to state, though the general process is the same in all districts.
- Pass a vision test
Many states require drivers to pass a vision test before renewing their license. These are issued at the DMV or a driver's license office.
- Update information that has changed
Update the address on file with the DMV before filing your renewal form. It is generally not possible to do both at the same time. If you want to update the photo on your license, do so at a DMV office.
- File a renewal form
Fill out the appropriate form and submit it to the DMV in person or by mail. Include a method of payment and any additional paperwork that is necessary, such as the results of your vision test.
