As of February 2015, release of the Mazda 6 SkyActiv-D diesel is postponed until further notice. Mazda CEO Jim O'Sullivan announced the delay at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show, with unsatisfactory performance of the SkyActiv-D engine cited as reason for the postponement.
Initially planned for a Spring 2013, release of the Mazda 6 diesel was postponed on two separate occasions. The planned Mazda 6 SkyActiv-D equips the mid-size sedan with a 2.2 liter four-cylinder diesel engine. A urea injection system treats the vehicle's exhaust to meet emission standards.
Current models of the Mazda 6 are equipped with the SkyActiv-G four-cylinder gasoline engine and a six-speed transmission. As of 2015, Mazda's SkyActiv-D diesel engine is available in some versions of the Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV.
