As of 2015, safety recalls issued for the Jeep Liberty were due to airbags deploying unexpectedly, malfunctioning of active head restraints and potential fuel tank leakage. The 2002 and 2003 Jeep Liberty model years have the most recalls with 16 and 15 recalls, respectively.
Inadvertent deployment of airbags while driving due to electronic interference can potentially result in an accident. It was determined that Liberty's fuel tank was at risk of leakage during a rear collision, and in the presence of an ignition source it may catch fire.
Potential loss of steering ability and problems with the windshield wiper system were additional reasons for Jeep Liberty recalls.
