Fiberglass truck bed covers are useful for shielding items in the truck bed from the elements and potential thieves, and they can improve fuel mileage by up to a mile per gallon. Cargo in an uncovered pickup truck bed is exposed to the elements and is relatively easy for someone to steal compared to something locked in a car. While soft covers and tarps may offer some protection against rain and sun, they are not usually as effective as a hard fiberglass truck bed cover and are most ineffective at dissuading thieves. A hard fiberglass cover is much harder for the elements to penetrate and can prevent most thieves from accessing the contents of the truck bed if it is equipped with a lock.
Studies have demonstrated improvements to gas mileage on trucks using any type of cover. This effect is likely due to the improved aerodynamics of the truck as compared to one with an open bed. This even holds true if the truck's tailgate is left open.
One-piece fiberglass truck bed covers are the most sturdy, but they can be awkward to remove and severely limit the cargo space of the truck when in place. Folding covers offer many of the benefits of a one-piece cover, but sections can be left open when transporting larger items. Their hinges make them somewhat less sturdy than one-piece covers, however.Learn more about Car Parts & Maintenance
