To dispose of fuel properly, try visiting a local fire department, recycling center or hazardous waste disposal center that takes excess gasoline. Marathon Petroleum Company LP cautions against disposing of gasoline by pouring it onto the ground or into a sewer, street drain, stream or trash can.
Improper disposal of gasoline can damage the environment by causing fires, explosions, soil pollution and groundwater contamination. Old gasoline or kerosene is typically usable if a person reconditions it. To recondition old fuel, pour the gasoline into a container topped with a funnel, then mix 1 part filtered gasoline with 5 parts new gasoline. Either a coffee filter or two thin layers of cloth should line the funnel.
