Civilians can buy military aircraft, but weapons systems and any classified or sensitive technologies are stripped out before the sale, reports Wired. Prices for military jets vary depending on the age of the aircraft, with more modern jets such as the Su-27 commanding $5 million or more as of 2015.
Military aircraft have many civilian uses aside from aerobatics or recreational flight, explains Wired. Some companies require aircraft that can fly at high speed and altitude to serve as testbeds for new equipment and research. Older Soviet aircraft such as the Su-27 and MiG 21 are among the most popular former military aircraft for civilian purchase.
