The most popular Chevrolet Corvettes are the base models for each generation, and the best-selling overall model as of 2015 is the 1979 C3 Stingray. Chevrolet produced approximately 53,000 1979 Corvettes as compared to 20,737 C7 Stingrays produced for the 2015 model year.
High-performance versions of the Corvette such as the Z06 or ZR1 have been less-popular than base models both due to higher prices and lower production numbers. For example, only 8,653 Z06 Corvettes were produced for the 2015 model year. Corvettes with automatic transmissions are also more popular than cars with manual transmissions, with 75 percent or more of buyers opting for automatic transmissions since the 1970s.
