In 2014, the most popular car manufacturers by sales were Toyota, Volkswagen, General Motors, Renault-Nissan and Hyundai-Kia. Toyota, GM and Volkswagen were almost equally popular, with each manufacturer posting sales of around 10 million motor vehicles for the fiscal year.
In most cases, the auto manufacturer produces numerous makes of automobiles in addition to its namesake brand. Toyota manufactures the economical Scion brand and builds luxury models under the Lexus name. Much of Volkswagen's large sales stem from the vast array of auto brands the German company owns. Aside from the traditional Volkswagen line of vehicles, the group also owns the Lamborghini, Audi, Bentley and Porsche brands, among several other marques.
